Early life

Born on 19th December 1934 in Jalgaon, Maharashtra; Pratibha Patil was born to a Marathi Family. She was the daughter of Gangabai and Nana Saheb, who were posted at Jalgaon as government prosecutors.

She spent most of her early childhood in Jalgaon and Chlisgaon, which was located close to her ancestral village, Nadgaon. She had to lose her mother at the age of 12 and was brought up strictly under the supervision of her aunt Baasaheb.

Dr. Devisingh was an MLA in the Amravati constituency during 1985 - 1990, and later he successfully became the first Mayor of Amravati in the year 1992.

Dr. Sekhawat had been a senate member, and an acting vice-chancellor of Amravati university, and also had been an active member of the Maharashtra State School Education Board committee on the responsibility of the Chemistry subject curriculum and has also jointly published some textbooks for the students at the misled school.

Education and Career

Pratibha Patil did her schooling at R.R.

Then, she joined the Indian National Congress (Congress Party) and made her entry into politics by defeating three veteran leaders in the year 1962 and became a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly at the age of 27. She handled the portfolio of Public Health and Social Welfare during her time of being a member of the legislative assembly and made a reputation by virtue of loyalty to her party.

Later in 1985, she secured herself a seat in the Rajya Sabha (i.e., the upper chamber of the Indian Parliament), and there she served as the deputy chairman within the tenure 1986 to 1988. Thereby, Patil left the upper house in 1990 and was elected to represent Amravati in the Lok Sabha, i.e., the lower house, in 1991.

However, she returned to public services in 2004, when she was appointed as the governor of the Northwestern state of Rajasthan,कार्यालय के लिए पहली महिला और 17 वीं राज्यपाल बन रही हैं।

With 30 years of journey as an MLA representing her constituency, Mr. Pratibha Patil had carried out various welfare activities from the grass-root level which provided her with a good understanding of the socio-economic problems prevalent in rural India. As a part of the Maharashtra government, she has voluntarily selected the departments such as Education, Public Health, Social Welfare, and prohibition to help the misfortunate as well as the weaker sections of society.

In the journey as a philanthropist

Smt. Pratibha Patil established the Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, which is an educational institute that governs various schools and colleges in Amravati, Jalgaon, Pune, and Mumbai. Moreover, she had also established the Shram SadhanaTrust, which basically consists of hostels established for the sake of working women residing in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune. Also, she established an engineering college in Jalgaon District, for the benefit of the rural youth.

In addition to this, she has also been the co-founder of a cooperative sugar factory named Sant Muktabai Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana, located at Muktainagar.

Pratibha Patil had founded a cooperative bank named the Pratibha Mahila Sahakri Bank, whose license was been canceled by the Reserve Bank of India, and its trading ceased in February 2003. However, no matter how much she had to suffer failures, the bank she set up had provided her relatives with illegal loans which ultimately exceeded the bank’s share capital. Moreover, the sugar mill established by her had taken a loan from the bank established by her, which later couldn’t be repaid.

However, these loans were ultimately waived off by the bank and this resulted in the liquidation of the bank. P. D. Nigam, a government liquidator stated that ‘the fact that relatives of the founder chairperson (Pratibha Patil) were among those indiscriminately granted loans and that some illegal loan waiver was done has come up in our audit”. Interestingly, six of the top ten defaulters in the bank were linked to her relatives.

Her philanthropy and humanitarian deeds have been listed and appreciated wholly by everyone, and it has made an immense impact on the well-being of the population of Indians who were often misguided or ignored.

However, Smt. Pratibha Patil had always been a silent crusader who believes in ‘‘क्रियाएं शब्दों से अधिक जोर से बोलती हैं’, and even after providing so much to society, her efforts and action are often unsung and unheard.
